Two sisters walking to high school together were struck by a vehicle on Hillsborough Avenue, leaving one of them in critical condition, a Tampa police spokeswoman said.
It happened during rush-hour traffic at 25th Street, and both directions of Hillsborough Avenue have been shut down.
Norma Velasquez-Cabrera, 15, and her sister Victoria, 14, were walking to Middleton High School but were not in a crosswalk and were likely taking a shortcut across six lanes of traffic when they were struck, police said.
Both were taken to the hospital. Norma is in critical condition and Victoria is in stable condition, TPD said. The girls' mother is with them at the hospital.
"We have a very active investigation to determine which way the car was headed and which way the girls were walking," McElroy said.
The view from SkyFOX showed a tan sedan parked at the scene. It had damage to the windshield. The driver of the vehicle was also a teenager heading to Hillsborough High School, police say.
That driver will likely not be charged, according to police.
