Public transit soars, new studies show

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

Today is Transit Driver Appreciation Day, and it comes just days after the American Public Transportation Association said Americans took 10.7 billion trips on public transit – the highest annual ridership number in 57 years.

It's the eighth year in a row that more than 10 billion trips were taken on public transportation systems nationwide.

Locally, record ridership numbers are being reported as well.  Hillsborough Area Regional Transit, also known as HART, says ridership has reached new highs.

February was the highest month for weekday average bus ridership in history.  Weekday average ridership reached 52,896.   Along with enhanced service and better on-time performances, HART employees say they registered a remarkable increase in riders over the past year.

New figures show that in the last year the agency's bus readership jumped 3.5 percent, to about 1.24 million.

PSTA in Pinellas County also recorded an increase. In January, it provided 1,158,951 rides throughout the county and to Tampa, making for the second highest ridership ever for the month.
