World Wide Web turns 25

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

"The internet gives us access to every bit of information man has ever known. It's just an amazing ability and cat videos…it also gives us cat videos," said FOX 13 webmaster Chris Boex.

It's turned 25 years old.

For FOX 13 senior web producer Chris Boex the web is not only his source of employment, but also his daily tool.

"Our primary goal is to connect with our viewers whether it's with social media or with web in general," he said.

Speaking of social media, we wouldn't have that without the internet. And without social media how would the "selfie" ever have taken off?

The internet is the great interconnector.

"You can make it as small as you want. I can just send you a message ...or I can speak to the globe," said Al Tompkins, Broadcaster/Online Leader at The Poynter Institute.

And it's just a finger-tip away. Schools use it, businesses use it and governments use it. The web has changed our lives.

"The internet is a long way from being porn and puppies. It's incredibly valuable to our society," Tompkins said.

So what about 25 years from now? We're seeing glimpses, with things like Google Glass and wearable technology.

"Every device you own whether it's your fridge your toaster to your phone, they're all going to be connected on the web," Boex said.
