USF Senior Shane Lewis competes in the triple jump at the NCAA Championships Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
"Only a handful of people in the country get to do it," Lewis says. "I'm actually just thankful that I get the opportunity to be a Bull and also to go represent USF at this nationals track meet."
Lewis' personal best jump, a school record 15.95 meters, qualified him for the elite event. Shane tries not to think about exactly how far he needs to jump to compete.
"The more I get it in my head for me is if I go out thinking 'oh, I have to go P.R. or I have to jump really big' instead of just doing what I did to get there... everybody has to jump what they did to get there, you know. Any given day you can have a bad day you can have a good day so my plan is just to go out and just do my best that I can."
If Shane Lewis records a mark in the NCAA championships, he earns All American status. If he finishes in the top 8, Shane's considered a 1st team All American.
Shane aims to win, but stays humble.
"To win? That would be a blessing, to be honest. I would be, that would be... one of the most grateful things that I would be grateful for in my life."
