Eagles Get 'Versatile Weapon' Sproles From Saints For Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired a running back to pair with 2013 NFL rushing champ LeSean McCoy.

FOX 29's Howard Eskin reported Thursday morning that, according to a source, the Eagles had traded a fifth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for running back Darren Sproles.

The Eagles later confirmed the move to acquire Sproles for the 2014 draft pick (which originally belonged to the New England Patriots), saying the team had added "another versatile weapon to our backfield."

"Since 2011, only 2 @NFL RBs have 150+ catches & 8+ rec TDs: @DarrenSproles and @CutonDime25. (h/t @RLiuNFL) #FlyEaglesFly," the Eagles tweeted, mentioning the Twitter handles of McCoy and Sproles as well as the NFL Director of Football Communications writer who mentioned that stat.

Sproles, 30, out of Kansas State, has played nine seasons in the NFL, first for the San Diego Chargers and then with the Saints.

The small, speedy back missed all of 2006 but has played at least 13 games in every other season. He's got 43 career touchdowns (11 rushing, 27 receiving and five on returns), including 4 TDs last year, and has racked up more than 15,000 all-purpose yards.

The Birds also announced Thursday that they have agreed to terms with corner back Nolan Carroll on a two-year deal, noting that he had 26 career starts and three interceptions for Miami in 2013.

The team's biggest move so far in free agency has been signing safety Malcolm Jenkins, also from the Saints. For his part, Jenkins said Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was a big reason he decided to come to Philly.

Another free agent brought in by the Eagles was linebacker Bryan Braman.

Braman is known for his special teams play, most notably a tackle without a helmet last year with the Houston Texans, but also because he was a former Abercrombie & Fitch model.
