NORTHBROOK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A falling bookshelf fatally injured a 3-year-old girl Wednesday morning in north suburban Northbrook.

Anna Heotis became trapped under the bookcase at her home in the 1900 block of Clover Road, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Police responded about 10:50 a.m. after receiving a call that a falling bookcase seriously injured the child, according to a release from Northbrook police.

The girl was taken by ambulance to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview while first responders tried to resuscitate her, but she later died, according to Northbrook police.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital 11:28 a.m., the medical examiner's office said.

An autopsy Thursday found she died of compressional asphyxia and ruled her death an accident, the medical examiner's office said.

The Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of neglect against her father, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.

The agency has had no prior contact with the family, and another child in the home is being monitored under a DCFS safety plan, Resa said.
