PINELLAS PARK (FOX 13) -

A Pinellas County mother died early Monday morning after she lost control of her car and drove into a retention pond.

Jennifer Wolfe's routine trip to grab groceries ended in a phone call that turned her husband's world upside down.

James Wolfe says Jennifer ran to pick up some things at Walmart a little after midnight on Monday. Just minutes later, he got a phone call from her.

"She sounded panicked, I couldn't barely understand what she was saying. She was saying someone pulled out and ran her off the road and now she was in a pond and she could not get out of the car. I kept trying to tell her to get out of the car. Whatever you can do, get out of the car. Get out of the car. She said for whatever reason, she couldn't," James Wolfe said Monday afternoon.

It was dark outside, and Jennifer couldn't pinpoint her location. Her husband told her to hang up and call 911.

"Right before she hung up, I heard her kind of scream and then I heard, it kinda sounded like water," he said.

911 operators did receive a call from Jennifer's cell phone, but they were never able to connect with her.

"As soon as the operator picked up the phone, the call at that point dropped," St. Petersburg Police's Mike Puetz said.

Dive teams and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office helicopter finally found Jennifer's Honda Odyssey van about an hour later, submerged in a retention pond off 28th Street North.

She was just minutes away from her family's apartment. She was rushed to the hospital, but doctor's couldn't save her.

Now, police are looking for the driver Jennifer described in her final moments. They're looking for potential witnesses and surveillance video from neighboring businesses.

"Was this just an accidental issue where a car didn't see her and cut her off, and caused her to swerve in there, or was there some sort of road rage issue going on?" Puetz said.

As police piece together the tragedy, her family will never be the same. Jennifer leaves behind her husband and their two little boys.

Her husband says it's a heartache that will never heal.

"She was just a wonderful person and she didn't deserve this," James Wolfe said.

Their investigation into the accident in ongoing.
