The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a traffic death.
Deputies said it happened Sunday morning on Pipkin Road West in Lakeland.
58-year-old Thomas Edward Brown was killed after being hit by a semi-truck.
The sheriff's office said he was wearing all dark clothing and walking in the roadway, with his back to traffic, in an unlit area.
The truck, driven by 44-year-old William J. House, was hauling a tanker trailer.
The driver told detectives he felt the truck hit something.
He stopped and discovered he had hit a pedestrian in the roadway.
Family members of Brown said this was the second time he had been hit by a car while walking in the roadway.
The sheriff's office also believes he may have been impaired.
The truck driver was wearing his seatbelt. He was not impaired or speeding.
No charges are pending.
