Several Bay Area veterans were laid to rest in a unique service this week. No family members attended; only their fellow servicemen and women.
A total of 10 veterans were honored in a service held every month for servicemen and women who died without family.
The service was held at Bay Pines in St. Pete. Each of the veterans who passed away over the last month was remembered, regardless of their branch of service.
"For one reason or another, their families couldn't make it or they outlived their families. So we give them, as a group, the same honor as we've given to the other veterans who have passed away and had family present," explained Capt. Ben Droweinga of the American Legion.
The unattended memorial service is held the first Tuesday of every month at Bay Pines National Cemetery.
