DETROIT (WJBK) -

A 76-year-old man died tragically when he froze to death after getting locked out of his senior living complex in Detroit.

His two daughters received a call that their father, Homer Hallum, had left the building through a back door and became locked out of the building. He was also trapped in the parking lot, which is gated, and did not have a key or a key fob to get back into the building or out of the parking lot.

"He had no other choice in blistering cold, below-zero weather - all he could do is lay down and, basically, die," says his daughter Shelia Garrison.

The temperature that night was three degrees with a wind chill of negative 20.

"The guard that retrieved him from outside said he was stiff as a board and that he was cold as ice, like, heavy cold," says Garrison.

Hallum died on the way to the hospital.

His family has so many questions, such as if the apartment building ever told their father not to use the back door, or if this has happened before. They say management at the complex, Morton Manor, has not answered their questions. Management also declined to talk to FOX 2's Erika Erickson.

"Anybody out there, check on your loved ones every day, because you don't want to get the call that I got," says daughter Theresa Hallum.

The funeral for Hallum will be Friday, March 7 at the Barksdale Funeral Home on East State Fair in Detroit beginning at 1 p.m. The viewing is Thursday, March 6 from 5-8 p.m.
