Florida's 13th Congressional district is a competitive U.S. House seat that covers much of Pinellas County. Republican Davis Jolly and Democrat Alex Sink secured the major party nominations in this race to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Bill Young.
Lucas Overby (LPF) and Michael S. Levinson (WRI) are also running. It is currently the hottest Congressional race in the nation, as leaders in both major political parties know the race can indicate which messages may drive voting behavior in the November mid-term elections.
Republicans have a slight advantage in voter registration in this district. County records show 170,565 registered Republicans, 159,213 registered Democrats, and 111,656 voters registered with no party affiliation.
Polls have shown the race is close, and the candidates and their allies have already spent $8.2 million in campaign ads.
Republican David Jolly is an attorney and former advisor to former Congressman Bill Young. He currently serves as vice president for Boston Finance Group, a finance and private equity firm.
Jolly has campaigned on cutting taxes, reducing government waste, and repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Democrat Alex Sink has a background in banking. She previously served as Florida's Chief Financial Officer, and lost a close race for Florida Governor in 2010 to Governor Rick Scott.
Sink has focused her campaign themes on trying to break the gridlock in Washington. She has also campaigned on cutting wasteful spending and fiscal restraint.
