NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

An explosion rocked a town home complex in Mercer County, N.J., Tuesday afternoon, killing one person and injuring several others. It happened in a densely populated Heritage Crossing community on Crockett Lane in Ewing. The blast ignited a fire that tore through several units.

PSE&G said in a statement that it was working in the area before the blast after a contractor damaged a gas line.

"Crews were working on repairs when there was an ignition at about 1 p.m.," PSE&G said in the statement. "Two PSE&G employees were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cause is under investigation."

At least seven people, five PSE&G workers and two contractors, were injured in the blast and fire.

A spokesman at Capital Regional Medical Center said it has received six patients and two of the injured apparently have traumatic injuries.

The explosion destroyed at least two units. Video from the scene showed a large debris field and a large plume of smoke rising from the area. Insulation covered nearby trees and several neighboring buildings were damaged.

A real estate professional familiar with the development said that the community is fed by natural gas lines.

Ewing is in western New Jersey, near the Delaware River. Exit 2 of I-95 was closed because of the incident. It was causing significant delays in the area of Exit 1.
