Dozen dogs found dead after Long Island garage fire

Posted: Updated:

FREEPORT, N.Y. (AP) -- Officials say as many as 12 dogs were found dead after firefighters put out a massive blaze that engulfed a one-car garage on Long Island.

Firefighters discovered between 10 and 12 dead dog bodies, including some that appeared to be puppies, after putting out the blaze Thursday afternoon, Freeport Fire Department Executive Director Ray Maguire said.

Animal control officers rescued two dogs found in front of the garage.

Maguire said multiple agencies are investigating and the fire site is now a crime scene. He said the dogs may have been pit bulls.

The home's co-owner told Newsday the house is supposed to be unoccupied. Fernando Cruz said he now lives in Texas.

Authorities are investigating whether the garage was possibly used for breeding or dog fighting.
