Early Spring Lawn Care

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Signs of spring are now upon us throughout Atlanta. It's time to start prepping your landscape to keep lawns looking lush and green during the spring and summer months. Here are some care and maintenance tips to help you tend your lawn like a pro!

  • Crabgrass Preventer:
  1. In early March, apply the first application of crabgrass preventer to control grassy weeds in all types of lawns
  2. Stop the crabgrass before the seeds have time to germinate – once its visible it's too late!
  • Reseed Fescue:
  1. When weather begins to warm, reseed your Fescue lawn or just plant seed in the bare spots
  • 7 Steps to Reseed Your Lawn:
  1. Determine approximate square footage that needs to be reseeded
  2.  Kill out any existing weeds with Kleen-Up a week before planting
  3. Put down at least an inch of topsoil or soil conditioner to soften the Georgia red clay
  4. Add Pike Lawn Starter fertilizer to the soil
  5. Use a broadcast spreader, and apply Atlanta Blend Fescue Grass Seed. Add amount of seed you have determined necessary for your square footage and lay down as even as possible.
  6. Put down a light layer of wheat straw over newly seeded area
  7. Water well, typically about 30 minutes
  • Fertilize Fescue Lawns:
  1. Apply a slow release lawn food like Pike Lawn Food that is high in nitrogen.
  1. This fertilizer will promote a healthy green color and will feed your lawn for about 2 months
  2. Apply a second application of slow release fertilizer in early or mid-May
  • Mow Monkey Grass:
  1. In early March, clean up monkey grass by cutting it with the lawn mower. Make sure your mower is set to the highest setting.
  • Apply a Pre-Emergent for Crabgrass & Weed Control:
  1. In early March, apply a pre-emergent herbicide to established lawns to help control summer weeds.
  2. Remember, once you apply pre-emergent, you can't reseed for at least 6 weeks
  3. Determine if reseeding or a weed preventer is more important for your lawn
  • Sharpen The Blades:
  1. Spring showers bring growing lawns. Sharpen your lawn mower blades or replace them now in preparation for spring and summer.
