Teen swallows swords for sport

LILBURN, Ga. -

A Lilburn teenager is proving that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to -- no matter how unusual the goal may be!

15-year-old Sasha Ashley decided she wanted to learn how to swallow swords. So she researched it and started practicing, with a coat hanger. Once she had that down, she went to her parents.

"She said mom, I've got this really cool new thing I learned that I want to show you, but don't freak out!" said Sasha's mom, Tamara.

Tamara needed a few days to digest her daughter's new hobby, before she could actually watch her do it. She videotaped that first demonstration, and her reaction to it...surprised even her.

"She pulled out the coat hanger and she just did it and actually it did not look scary. She just did it so smoothly and easily. And I guess we had been mentally prepared and we were like Whoa!That's really cool!" she said.

But the practice is dangerous, especially when Sasha graduated from coat hanger...to sword.

"Some people bump into their heart and they have to go to the hospital, cause when you put the sword down it slightly pushes the organs away," said Sasha.

Sasha files the sword so that it is not sharp. She uses the appropriate length of sword for her body size and she only uses one sword at a time; all factors that reduce the danger level.

Sasha's newfound skill has landed her acceptance into the Sword Swallowers Association International. A huge accomplishment, says Tamara. "There are about 25 female sword swallowers in the world so this is something unusual, difficult, that she did."

Which has made both mom and Sasha...very proud.

"She did her research and she's been careful about it and I think that actually shows a lot of maturity in my opinion."

Sasha plans to start performing her new skill publicly.
