Law enforcement agencies in Pasco County are investigating after social media rumors of violence at Zephyrhills High School startled parents and students.
FOX 13 received several calls and emails from concerned parents this morning. Most reported hearing about a possible threat against the school via social media, and some indicated they were worried enough to keep their children home from school.
The school district and law enforcement say they investigated and found the threat to be nothing more than a rumor.
"At this point in the investigation there has been nothing to substantiate the threat," stated a Zephyrhills Police Department release, though it continued to say, "Safety precautions were taken by ZHS and ZPD personnel to ensure the safety of students and staff."
"Rumors of violence at Zephyrhills High School have been thoroughly investigated by law enforcement, including home visits to two students," the district explained on Facebook. "There is no risk of danger, but in an abundance of caution, there will be additional patrols at the school today."
ZPD says it will continue to investigate the origin of the rumor. Criminal charges are possible.
