A pair of pups will now be working hard to keep our students safe in St. Petersburg.
Roo and Macy are the newest members of the St. Petersburg Police Department's school safety team, and their specialty is gun sniffing.
They are specially trained to search for firearms and shell casings. Macy, the chocolate lab, was donated by Southeastern Guide Dogs because she didn't meet their criteria.
Roo, a yellow lab, was bought and trained using grant money from the federal government.
The dogs and their handlers will perform random check at schools throughout St. Petersburg.
They will search classrooms, lockers and buses, in addition to performing a complete sweep of school grounds.
This is the first program of its kind in the country.
