Woman finds sealed, WWII-era letter

Posted: Updated:

Sheila Polk loves anything related to World War II, especially memorabilia. She certainly did not expect to find the intriguing piece that she did recently at the Goodwill Store in Lakeland.

It is a letter dated 1945 and addressed to PFC Helen Rothurmel, 555th WAC Squadron, Love Field, Dallas Texas. The 555th was an African American unit.

The letter is from Sgt. Albert C. Alm , Jr. , Army Airfield, Palm Springs, California.

It is still sealed.

"It's a personal sentimental thing," Polk told FOX 13. "They do movies about lost love letters, and I am thinking who knows what's in here that she has never seen? I would love for her to get it."

Polk has decided not to open the letter, and hopes the military helps her find Rothurmel, if she is even still alive.

Rothurmel is a bit romantic about the contents of the correspondence.

"Her life could have been changed from this one letter," Polk said.

It still may be, if Polk's mission to find Rothurmel is successful.
