Pinellas detention deputy arrested, charged with battery

LARGO (FOX 13) -

A Pinellas County detention deputy is under arrest after being seen on camera kicking and kneeing a teenage inmate.

Deputy Joel De Los Reyes is charged with battery. Surveillance video released by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office shows him assaulting a 16-year-old inmate.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says De Los Reyes did not immediately report the incident so the investigation did not start until the victim reported it.

Gualtieri says the attack was unprovoked.

"The message is do the right thing. If something happens where you don't do the right thing, own up to it," he said.

De Los Reyes has resigned.

A second deputy named Adrian Nanu has been disciplined with a week-long suspension.

The sheriff says Nanu failed to report the incident immediately and then said De Los Reyes did not strike the victim.

The teen was not seriously injured.
