Teen Strives To Build Family Crisis Centers

Posted: Updated:

While most high school juniors are worrying about standardized testing, a Texas teen is buying houses for a good cause.

Kelsy Mauer, a sixteen-year-old from Kirbyville, Texas, bought a fixer-upper and hopes to turn it into a house where people can stay during a family crisis.

"I get that a whole lot, that ‘I'm just a junior in high school,' and I get, ‘well okay, you can't do that all by yourself," said Mauer. "I think the more that people tell me that I can't do it, it just makes me want to do it even more."

The house has broken windows, chipped paint and piles of trash, but family and friends are helping Mauer with the renovations. One day she hopes it will be a free family crisis center.

Mauer says she bought the house for two thousand dollars.

"Just sometimes, people have enough, they get frustrated, [and] they get stressed out. They have things going on at work that they might, you know, worry about. And so little things just keep stacking up and stacking up, and in a few cases, it just gets into where it can be a dangerous situation for somebody," said Mauer.

The junior plans to have the center up and running in six months. Mauer says in the future she hopes to open more houses in the community.

"The community needs something like this and I hear a lot of people tell me that, ‘you know, it's gonna be hard,' but I think I can do it. It's gonna be worth it because it will help a whole lot of people."

Mauer also wants to become a family marriage counselor once her family crisis center project finishes.

"It makes me very proud as a parent to see her wanting to give back to her community," said mother Michelle Mauer.
