The Waterford Kettering senior has a rare disorder called X-Linked Lymphoproliferative Disease or XLP. He's one of ten family members, all male, including his grandfather and cousins, who have the genetic mutation. The family is believed to be the largest group of family members in the world with the disease. Doctors say a bone marrow transplant is the only cure.

"I was diagnosed 2 years ago after word got around the family that we had a genetic disease that compromised our immune systems," McMann told Fox 2.

"We're blessed that the boys are doing well," added his mother, Lisa Angona. "In other XLP families they don't survive."

Right now, Ryan is being treated at U-M Mott Children's hospital in Ann Arbor. The fundraiser was held to help cover his medical costs and to encourage people to sign up for the bone marrow registry. A donor must be 18-60 years old and in good health. Doctors say the bone marrow replaces itself in four to six weeks. Click HERE to learn more about bone marrow donation.

"It's nice that all these people genuinely cared enough to come," said Sierra Janette, one of the volunteers. "Even if they just donated a couple of dollars it still helps out so much and it makes you feel good inside."

The family says they're overwhelmed by the support and hopeful about finding the right match for Ryan. If all goes well, he hopes to have the transplant this summer and attend college within a year following the procedure. His classmates have no doubt and they're cheering him on.

"His outlook is amazing," said classmate Jake Plautz. "Every day he come into class with high spirits there's nothing that can stop that kid."

"I feel like I'm gonna get through this," McMann added with a smile. "I couldn't be anymore positive now having all these people back me."
