CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois State Police shut down I-57 on Thursday evening after a multiple vehicle pileup took place near Peotone, Ill. At least seven semis and 12 other vehicles were involved.

At least ten people were transported area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, said Illinois State Police Joliet District Sgt. Brad Sprague.

ISP said heavy fog caused crash near Wilmington-Peotone Road at about 4:25 p.m. The accident brought traffic to a halt.

All southbound lanes and the leftmost northbound lane reopened about 9:30 p.m. between Manhattan/Monee Road and Wilmington/Peotone Road. Northbound traffic will be rerouted via Wilmington/Peotone Road, Route 50 and Manhattan/Monee Road back to I-57.

At least one of the trucks caught fire after the crash. One vehicle had to be extricated from beneath a semi by firefighters at the scene.

Extrication equipment were brought to the scene by emergency crews, and a request was made for heavy cranes. First responders from ISP, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Will County, and the Peotone and Monee fire departments.

State police continue to investigate the crash Thursday night.
