Cats rescued from Hernando mobile home available for adoption

Posted: Updated:

There are quite a few new faces at the SPCA Florida in Lakeland.

"This is where we are hoping people will come and look for animals," said Adam Lamb.

Many have lived through a nightmare.

"The animals were covered in their feces and urine they were also anemic and dehydrated," he said.

Twenty cats are cleaned up and ready for adoption.

They make up just a  few of the 42 cats pulled from an abandoned mobile home in Brooksville.

"Considering the circumstances the animals were in, pretty good condition medically, and a lot of them were socialized so that makes our job a lot easier to place them," Lamb said.

"I am sure they think they're living in a penthouse now; it was very cruel what was going on with those cats, and I don't understand how anybody thought it was okay," said neighbor Sheryl Sullivan.

Neighbors say the owners abandoned the trailer.

They would check on the cats and brought them food and water every few days but never removed them.

'We've suffered a lot, yes, but the cats have suffered, too," said Nancy Whitney-Conway.

There are no hard feelings towards the cats.

Whitney-Conway hopes it's a second chance for a better life.

"Even if they get a home for a year or 5 years or more, it's a lot better than what they were living in," she said.

SPCA Florida believes there are 30 or more cats still inside the mobile home. They say some are living in the walls.

Workers left food and water for the remaining cats, and the SPCA plans to return Monday to trap the remaining cats.

The cats who have been cleared are up for adoption.

They're at the SPCA Florida Campus, which is at 5850 Brannen Road South in Lakeland.
