Debate rages over location of medical marijuana dispensaries

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A medical marijuana dispensary could be coming to a block near you.

"Welcome, welcome aboard, welcome aboard. Everybody is happy and healthy and legal and everything, no problem," said Cesar Castellanos, manager of Cesar's Killer Margaritas in Lakeview.

Castellanos says he would welcome a medicinal marijuana dispensary to the neighborhood.

"If it's next door selling, I'm going to have more traffic so I'm going to have more business, for sure definitely for sure," said Castellanos.

The Chicago Sun Times reports proposed rules by the state would pave the way for at least a dozen medicinal marijuana dispensaries city wide, giving patients easy access.

But despite the state's ambitious plan, the Chicago Sun Times says the city wants dispensaries limited to manufacturing districts.

Alderman Ed Burke was quoted as saying, "I think the people of Chicago have the right to input on where these dispensaries will be located, just as they have the right to input where other business uses would be located."

Adam Bierman is the founder of The MedMen in Los Angeles, which he says is the first and largest marijuana consulting firm in the country. Bierman is coming to Chicago next week to host a day-long seminar for would-be-operators.

"I think trying to restrict the zoning of dispensaries as you're asking into industrial zoning is great. We want this to be successful. We don't want retail dispensaries showing up in malls tomorrow and people being up in arms because they didn't have the time to transition into this and the program not working," said Bierman in an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis.

"Things will have to work themselves out, this happens in every single state, there are always county and city issues, contradicting state issues but they all will get worked out," said Bierman.
