Camel on The Loose!

Posted: Updated:

I'm driving up a dusty hilly road. The street sign says I'm on Soledad Pass Road in Acton. I stop occasionally for a picture. I snap one of the dusty road and a horse off to the side of it. But, I was in search of a camel or, at least, a rancher that owns one. One of the few people who seem to live in this neck of the woods tells me it's the ranch next door where they have a camel. They didn't know about the chaos the animal had created earlier in the day.

Like that ad you see in theaters where a camel sashays down an aisle looking for popcorn, this one was heading toward Skylar Dossenbach's neighborhood. The camel visit didn't surprise her. He had wandered into her neighborhood before. Her dad, though, took it a little differently. Her father Steve, who is in his 70s, tried to lasso the big animal. But, the camel attacked leaving Dossenbach with a cut on his head. His daughter said he had to go to the hospital and get stitches.

LA County Animal Control, though, may have been a little surprised. An officer tells us it's really rare that they get a call for a "camel on the loose," although, there are some exotic animals in the area. The ranch the camel has been calling home also has zebras and ostriches.

In the end, officers corralled the camel. He was taken off to the Lancaster office for observation. Meanwhile, investigators are looking into the ownership of the animal. They say if there's no permit an incident involving an exotic animal on the loose is an automatic violation. That could be a misdemeanor punishable by fine.  If more violations are found the owner could be facing a felony charge which could carry jail time.
