Melting snow causes problems for Chicago area homeowners

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The snow and cold may be rough on people, but it's tough on homes too. Especially roofs.

The problem is ice dams that build up on the outside after gutters fill and freeze.

"When the snow continues to melt, those ice dams are going to get bigger, bigger, and bigger. And as they get bigger, that snow that continues to melt doesn't have anywhere to go anymore and it actually doesn't freeze it pools above the ice dam like a river dam. And then it actually seeps underneath the shingles, through the tarpaper, and into peoples homes," Mike Hilborn, owner of Roof to Deck Restoration said.

Mike Hilborn's company, Roof to Deck Restoration, cuts up the ice dams with pressurized steam, allowing the melting snow to drain out the gutters.

Unfortunately for this homeowner, the interior damage has already begun. Water from the melting ice is seeping through walls, buckling floors and forcing her to keep buckets in her son's closet.

"So the water has just continued to drip, through there, all the way down and then it also drips down here and comes out over here and to comes onto the floor so underneath the carpet you know it has molded the carpet over here and it comes and buckled all the floors from the water constantly, you know, dripping in," homeowner, Anissa Forman said.

But with keen memories of the flooding from last year, public works departments in flood prone areas will be closely monitoring temperatures and river levels.

In Riverside they may pre-position sandbags and barricades if it comes to that.

Meanwhile, many other communities are encouraging people to make sure the sewer drains in their neighborhoods are cleared so the melting snow has someplace to go.
