DETROIT (WJBK) -

Rosie O'Donnell was in Detroit Friday to serve as the keynote speaker at the annual Go Red For Women Luncheon.

During her speech she revealed for the first time publicly she has undergone weight loss surgery. She underwent a Vertical Gastric Sleeve, or VGS, in the summer of 2013, a year after her heart attack. The procedure removes part of the stomach.

She said she has lost 40 pounds since the surgery and doctors recommend she loses 40 more pounds.

She says, "I did what many women do - and I did not take care of myself. And that's why I'm here, to try to get women to know you're worth it; take care of yourself; and know the symptoms."

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, killing more women than all forms of cancer combined.

An estimated eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. In fact, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
