911 calls from wrong-way driver's friends released

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A 911 call made by a friend of Daniel Morris says Morris may have been "upset" when he took the keys to her SUV Sunday morning.

She had no way to know that 12 minutes earlier, Morris had crashed head-on into another car, killing four USF Fraternity brothers and himself.

The crash itself was captured on cell phone video, along with the terrifying 42 seconds that preceded it. It shows a white SUV speeding the wrong way down Interstate 275 on a collision course with a 2010 Hyundai Sonata.

At least 22 cars can be seen avoiding Morris before the crash just north of Busch Blvd.

The crash, according an FHP report, happened at 2:12 a.m.

At 2:26 a.m. the friend makes the first of two 911 calls. Referring to Morris as her "brother-in-law," she tells a dispatcher that Morris took the keys to a 2001 Ford Expedition and unexpectedly left, saying: "He's pretty much taken the truck, he's stolen the truck for the most part."

She tells the dispatcher Morris had been gone for one to two hours, but had no idea where he went.

She says Morris had no known psychological problems, but said "the only reason he would have left is he was upset," adding later in the call that he was "under pressure," but never explaining why.

In her second 911 call 10 minutes later, she tells another dispatcher that there was a birthday party at her house when "something went out of control and my brother-in-law to our vehicle."

The second call sheds no new light on where Morris was going or his state of mind.

On Monday, Morris' estranged wife told FOX 13 News they were separated. She said Morris was staying with friends and was expected to start a new job Monday morning at Port Manatee.

She said Morris had recently come to Tampa from Michigan. On the 911 tape, the caller says "we just brought him back from Detroit a week ago."

FHP is still investigating whether drugs or alcohol had a role in the crash. When the dispatcher asks if Morris had been drinking, the 911 caller says "maybe one or two ... other than that he's been fine the entire night. No problems until about an hour ago"
