Urban planners look at tracks in snow

MYFOXNY.COM -

It seems like we're all a little tired of snow by now. But some urban city planners say give us more. Believe it or not, the analysis of both human and vehicular traffic patterns in snowy conditions has a name: "sneckdown," derived from the words "snow" and "neckdown," an urban planning term for curb expansion.

"Certainly all throughout the city this would be an interesting way of analyzing of where people walk and where we need to build more sidewalks," said Lucius Riccio, a former New York City DOT commissioner. "I've seen it used in parks. Many times a park could be built and instead of putting in the asphalt pathways, you wait to see where people walk and wear out the grass, and then put in the walkway."

Photos taken in Philadelphia during a recent snowstorm show where potential pedestrian islands could go or even stop signs, all by analyzing where the snow is left behind.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, this past week the dot there tweeted: "Since we know the snow is coming, send us your pictures of wasted space at intersections in Raleigh."

Watch where you walk: it could change your city.
