NJ Faces Winter Storm; Gov. Wants Everyone To Stay Safe

TRENTON, N.J. -

"I want people to stay safe. And that's the most important thing," Christie said in a press conference this afternoon as New Jersey is under a winter storm warning.

Forecasters say snow is expected to begin falling Wednesday night and slow the commute into work Thursday.

Forecasters say the precipitation is expected to begin as snow before mixing with sleet and returning to snow. Parts of the state, especially along the coast, could see it turn into rain.

Forecasters are predicting accumulations of up to 1 inch in coastal Cape May, Atlantic and Ocean counties. Forecasters say 6 to 10 inches are possible in central, western and northern New Jersey.

The state's Transportation Department says it has spent close to $70 million clearing the roads during 32 storms this winter. The previous record was $62.5 million for 38 storms last year.

The DOT has used more than 300,000 tons of salt.

"But my first and most important responsibility is to try to give you the best advice I can for you to stay safe. Because those are the things that are most important to the citizens of this state," Governor Christie said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
