One person was killed when a truck crashed into a car along I-75 in Gibsonton, sending it careening off a bridge and into the water.
According to FHP investigators, it began just before 3 a.m. when an ABC Liquors tractor-trailer tried to pass a slower-moving BMW sedan headed south along the interstate. For some reason, the truck clipped the car, which crashed into the bridge and then down into the Alafia River.
The car's driver was killed. He was later identified as James Dylan Proctor, 42, of Parrish.
The truck, meanwhile, overturned, spilling a small amount of fuel and a large portion of its 30,000 gallons of alcoholic beverages. Crews closed the highway's southbound lanes to clean up the liquor and broken glass.
The truck driver, Wayne Damari Waldon of Lakeland, was brought to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Traffic was detoured along U.S. 301 and U.S. 41. All lanes were open by 9 a.m.
Charges are pending, troopers said.
