If you had a warm shower this morning, a barbecue this weekend, and your house is warm when it gets chilly, be thankful. A lot of people who rely on propane are not as lucky.
There is a national propane shortage and the price is skyrocketing. It has doubled in the last month.
That's a big deal for so many people up north and elsewhere around the country who have been battling freezing temperatures because they rely on propane for heat.
It is also making people like Cathy Kudlinski think twice before placing an order. She and her husband Scott own Absolute Auto Repair in Dover. They heat their shop with propane, so they bought it for work -- but their tank at home was a different story.
" We were going to get it filled, but it was going to be $600, so we just said we'll wait and just use the regular conventional heating," Kudlinski told us.
The price of propane is high because of three factors:
The cold weather is pushing demand up and supplies down
Farmers had a bumper crop of corn this year, which they dry with propane
Distributors can only push so much propane through their pipelines, no matter how much people need it.
Experts say the crisis will not end until spring.
