One person was killed Monday morning in a crash on U.S. Highway 301 in Thonotosassa.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, it happened just north of Stacy Road around 9:45 a.m., when a driver attempted to pass a vehicle on a double yellow line.
Driving in a 2011 Chevy HHR, Rodney Manwaring sped up to pass the vehicle but did not make it in time, colliding with a portion of a Honda Civic, which was coming the other way.
The driver of that Civic died in the accident and has not been identified. FHP officials say after the collision it spun into a guard rail.
The view from SkyFOX showed two vehicles badly mangled. Emergency crews appeared to be searching a nearby ravine, but there is no indication from FHP that there were other victims.
Manwaring, 49, was flown to Tampa General Hospital but is expected to survive.
Charges are pending.
