Fatal crash closes U.S. 301

THONOTOSASSA (FOX 13) -

One person was killed Monday morningin a crash on U.S. Highway 301 in Thonotosassa.

According to the Florida HighwayPatrol, it happened just north of Stacy Road around 9:45 a.m., when a driverattempted to pass a vehicle on a double yellow line.

Driving in a 2011 Chevy HHR, RodneyManwaring sped up to pass the vehicle but did not make it in time, collidingwith a portion of a Honda Civic, which was coming the other way.

The driver of that Civic died in theaccident and has not been identified. FHP officials say after the collision itspun into a guard rail.

The view from SkyFOX showed twovehicles badly mangled. Emergency crews appeared to be searching a nearbyravine, but there is no indication from FHP that there were other victims.

Manwaring, 49, was flown to TampaGeneral Hospital but is expected to survive.

Charges are pending.
