Philly K-9 On The Road To Social Media Stardom

Posted: Updated:

We see police dogs on the scene of investigations; we know they work hard alongside their handlers to defend us, but did you also know that one Philadelphia K-9 is a star on the social media stage?

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce introduces us to "Thor," the newest and most unique four-legged member of the department.

Obedient, skillful, playful, and hardworking. Meet Thor. At two-and-a –half years old, weighing 70 pounds, this physically fit German Shepherd from Holland is the newest crime-fighting canine walking the streets of Philadelphia.

Within the first week and a half on the job, the narcotics K-9 proved himself as a valuable member of the force. "He helped serve a warrant the other day where a guy was running out the back of the house, and we were there waiting. The guy surrendered peacefully, thanks to the presence of the dog," Thor's handler says.

But what makes Thor most unique is not his investigative prowess but his social-media stardom. Thor is the first Philadelphia Police K-9 to create a Twitter account-- #TwentyThorteen. He's a selfie-snapping machine who craves the digital interaction. Thor's New Year's Resolution on Twitter included eating less, walking more, and breaking his chew toy addiction.

Thor's quick wit and charisma have earned him more than 500 followers, which is good for this attention-loving pup. The popularity is also equally important for the Philadelphia Police Department. Sergeant Gripp says, "Thor is not just getting his word out but the word of the police department out too."

Within seconds, he's able to personally connect with members of the community. He also sound off on whatever he wants, like this tweet: "I got my mind of Kibble and my Kibble on my mind #laiiiiddback."

"Thor is very series about his job but also very serious about having fun. He loves the Police Department and the citizens of Philadelphia," Gripp says.

Thor shares an especially strong bond with his handler. They've completed 950 hours training as a team. "It's a lot harder than I thought it was—a lot more training that I thought it was, but I love it. It's gratifying," Thor's handler confesses.

Thor has a work-hard, play hard mentality. His message to the community on Twitter is two-fold: "My paws are at your service, and I'm looking for some friends. Where are my dogs?"

So say hello, and give a warm welcome to the K-9 with the friendliest bark on the block. Just be careful, though. This pup –with-a –badge can be pretty tough on those who break the law!
