The fastest way to the heart: through the stomach

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

We'll all heard the saying: The fastest way to your lover's heart is through the stomach.

"It's all about romance. So many people want to increase the spark in their relationship, and food is a great way to do that," said Dr. Dae Sheridan, a clinical psychologist specializing in relationships.

But according to people we spoke with, romance doesn't always mix with what's in your kitchen.

"Is there anything you can think of that would be bad?"

"Garlic!" was a common response, along with...."Garlic and onions. Anything that could protrude from your system," another woman answers.

While many think foods known to leave lingering aromas after ingestion are a no-no, Dr. Dae says you might want to reconsider.

"Garlic is a superfood for libido. It is a stimulant, it raises testosterone, and it helps with blood flow. It increases your stamina and has those properties that make your nerves more sensitive," Sheridan said.

There are other libido launching foods you may have in your pantry, like almonds.

"Almonds are known to be an ancient symbol of was also shown that the smell of almonds created sexual arousal in women," Sheridan explained.

Other boosters are culinary treats.

"Everybody loves truffles, it's the it food, it raises androsterone, which makes others attracted to you, it raises those pheromones, and draws those people to you sexually," she says.

But we found the most bizarre libido launcher is packed in a jar. This one was a surprise: sauerkraut.

"Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage. There was one study in Croatia that found it had properties for erectile dysfunction, so it was called the Eastern European Viagra. They're not sure if it's the cabbage, the fermentation process, but that's what they're saying," Sheridan said.

It's not for everyone, but no matter the dish, sometimes it's simply the thought that counts. And even if your Valentine's day favorites aren't on the Libido Launching list, Dr. Dae says grocery shopping together, or just the intention of eating something you love, can spark romance.

The benefit of eggs may be more about how they look rather than what they do.

"So we have eggs, which is a symbol of fertility and also boosts your hormones. So when we think about eggs, there's lots of omega fats, there's lots of things in there that are heart healthy. And anything that helps the heart and helps blood flow is something that we're going to be looking for," she said.

For breakfast, consider oatmeal. "Oatmeal, which has that aveena sativa, which is known to stimulate your nerve endings," Dr. Dae says.

But as one happy wife tells us, it's less about what's on the table, and more about how it got there.

"As long as it's prepared well, and the man is cooking it for you for dinner, everything should be great in the bedroom."

Dr. Dae tells us another great way to spice things up in the kitchen is to prepare the meal together!

Ginger Study

Serum total testosterones significantly increased in experimental group that has received 100 mg/kg/day Ginger (p<0.05) in comparison to control group. Results revealed that administration of 100 mg/kg/day of ginger significantly increased sperm percentage, viability, motility and serum total testosterones. This suggested that ginger may be promising in enhancing sperm healthy parameters.
