City Clerk Mendoza wants ban on sale of puppy mill animals

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza wants a ban on the sale of so-called "puppy mill" dogs and cats.

A measure was introduced at City Council on Wednesday that would fine violators $1,000 a day, along with misdemeanor charges.

The ordinance would require pet stores to buy their animals from government-run facilities, humane societies or animal rescue groups. Similar restrictions have been passed in 40 other U.S. cities.

Mendoza is drumming up support for her "puppy mill ordinance" by asking the public to sign an online petition. A hearing on the proposed ban will be held on Feb. 26.
