NFL coach, wife on 'Uncommon Marriage'

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Despite enormous highs in the public eye like winning a Super Bowl and becoming the first African American coach to do so, life at home hasn't always been all 'ups' for the happily married Tony Dungy.

He and his wife, Lauren, parents to six children, have been married for 31 years. The couple says 'commitment' and a belief that God always has a bigger plan, is what keeps them going.

"If you persevere and fought through it God has something better for you," said the former Indianapolis Colts coach.

Tony and Lauren Dungy have written a book-- Uncommon Marriage-- about married life and how to make it work

"It’s so easy to say I’m tired, I’m giving up, but when you’re committed, then you’re like us and you can see 31 years of a pretty good marriage," said Lauren Dungy.

Way before the couple tied the knot decades ago, they discussed several important things that they continue to address today.

"We talk a lot about goals and what we want to do individually and together and the way we would raise our kids. Those conversations started early and they continue… regardless of where we are, we need to communicate," said Lauren Dungy.

One of the most trying times in the couple's life together happened when Tony Dungy was fired from his job. 

"I was six years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then I got fired...  I thought we got the team from perennial loser to winning team. Two weeks later I’m hired by Indianapolis and we end up winning the Super Bowl," said Dungy.

It's one of the many stories of pulling through the Dungys wrote about in the new book.

They'll be signing copies of Uncommon Marriage at Bookends bookstore in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2014 at 7 p.m.

    Hollywood legend Joan Rivers, 81, remains in serious condition at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan on Friday, according to her daughter, Melissa Rivers. The comedian and TV host was undergoing an outpatient procedure at a clinic on the Upper East Side on Thursday when she went into cardiac arrest. Rivers reportedly stopped breathing during the throat procedure.

    More than 300 people are expected to hop aboard their unicycles to ride across New York City for the 2014 Unicycle Festival. The three-day long festival begins Friday with a 13-mile ride across Brooklyn. The main event takes place on Governors Island from 12 pm-5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
