Mobile coupon apps

Posted: Updated:

Shoppers save billions every year by using coupons. And some get such a thrill from the savings, there's even a reality show all about it. But while everyone loves a deal, many of us can't be bothered with the actual clipping and carrying to the the store. That's why mobile coupon apps are growing in popularity.

We Skyped with Noah Godfey, the founder of one of the newest coupon apps: Checkout 51.

Each week the free app lists offers for 15 to 30 products from national brands. This week, Frosted Mini Wheats, Scrubbing Bubbles and Triscuits were among the products to save on.

Here is how it works: after you pick out products listed on the app and pay for them, you take the receipt, scan it and upload it to the app, and you get your refund.

Godfrey said that there is actually nothing to do when you hit the cashier. All you have to do is buy the product and upload the receipt. Checkout 51 will mail you a check for every $20 worth of deals that you redeem.

Other apps, like Ibotta work similarly.

If you're a very picky shopper or only buy organic or natural products, the app may not work for you.

But Checkout 51 said it has found plenty of takers. In fact, the app has been downloaded 400,000 times in the United States in just three weeks.
