There is a new PGA Tournament in the Bay area and it's called the Valspar Championship. It could also be called a rescue, because Valspar (a global company in the paint and coating business) stepped in and saved the tournament in Innisbrook, at the Copper Head Golf course.
The tournament is just about a month away. It will run from March 10th through March 16th -- and this is always a favorite stop for some of the biggest names on the PGA tour. But, even a favorite stop isn't going to survive without a major tournament sponsor.
Valspar is now the official paint supplier and of the PGA and Champions tour, so maybe that means there could be a "putting green" color coming out for consumers. There is no doubt that Valspar spent some big dollars to keep this tournament here for the next four years.
What makes a four-year commitment nice is that the pros can build relationships with the tournament staff -- which helps get the word out to other top names.
Plus, the really big winner of all this is charity. Valspar will contribute to the tournament charities and a lot of money has helped out those who need it. Over the years of this tournament, through it's various sponsors, the one constant has been the charity cash -- nearly $30 million has gone to local charities.
