A NJ Family Gets New Beginning With A New Home

Posted: Updated:

A New Jersey mother and her young daughter get a chance at a new beginning.

Habitat for Humanity dedicated a brand new home to the family in Mt. Holly Saturday.

The Smith family has not officially moved in yet, as crews are still putting the finishing touches on the house, but they took their first step towards a better life.

4-year-old Keyahnee Smith couldn't wait to show off her new home.

She has big plans for the color of her first bedroom.

"Purple and Pink," she said.

Her mother, Tiya became a first time homeowner, thanks to more than 250 hours of sweat equity, building her house and others homes through Habitat for Humanity.

"I'm excited, I'm happy," Tiya Smith said

Crews including former Eagle Tre Thomas, his former linemate, congressman Jon Runyan and our own Jennaphr Frederick began work on the two bedroom in the Spring.

A single mother, Smith and her daughter were living in a one bedroom apartment.

"It's a blessing. I'm about to start from scratch, start a family, start a home," Smith said.

Habitat for Humanity Burlington County Executive Director Lori Leonard said Tiya was a great candidate for the program because of her needs and attitude.

"She has a lot of energy and a lot of desire. She's always wanted to own her own home for her daughter. Nobody in her family has ever been a homeowner. It's almost kind of like when you're the first person in your family to graduate from college," Leonard said.

Joseph Schreiner donated the land for project after a fire burned down his home several years ago.

He was pleased to be a part of the ceremony.

"I'm just so happy, that they're happy. That was the ultimate purpose of the whole thing," Schreiner said.

Smith said she wants to continue to contribute to Habitat for Humanity, hoping she can give others what she has experienced.

"It's just a great feeling to be there helping. I know how it was when other families came out to help me, so I want to return the favor," she said.

The Smith family still has some work to do as well.

They have to get some furniture for their place before they move in next week.
