He's fast, determined, and nothing short of inspirational. Sitting next to his healthy leg is David Prince's prosthetic, and behind it is an incredible story of a life turned upside down.
"Well, I had been kicked out of my mother's house several times for doing drugs, having parties at the house, doing drugs in her house," Prince recalled.
A high school dropout at 17 with a lengthily rap sheet for drug dealing fueled by addiction, Prince, the ultimate rebel, became a motorcycle speed demon.
"I don't have to have a license, I don't have to have insurance, I don't have to have a tag, because if a cop tries to pull me over, I'm not gonna stop."
Five days after buying it, Prince -- already a mental wreck -- became a physical one too.
"Ended up just hitting a median and falling off, flying off, flipping off and sliding across the other side of the road and hitting a guard rail -- which ended up amputating my leg on impact."
Still, Prince's ego wouldn't allow him to accept his injury. A life laced with drugs, it took three more arrests and becoming homeless to finally make a change.
"I started lifting weights and riding a bike and whatnot and I found my replacement habit in doing that," he explained.
His passion for running ignited training for the Paralympics. He set records, got married, and even had a son. Then came a gut-wrenching injury.
"Had major surgery. The doctors said I would be lucky to ever be able to recreationally jog."
Prince defied the odds. With a modified prosthetic, determination, and guidance from world-renowned speed coach Loren Seagrave, the Brandon man was off to London.
"Running a world record and coming in third place behind two phenomenal bilateral amputee sprinters was humbling to say the least."
Oscar Pistorius, the 'Blade Runner," nabbed the gold and became the worldwide story.
While Prince's story became lost in the afterglow, the deep wounds of his past make his life successes all the more sweeter today.
"All those mistakes, all those terrible choices made me who I am, I'm thankful for them."
