Plant City police chief fired after extramarital affair

Posted: Updated:
PLANT CITY (FOX 13) -

Plant City Police Chief Steven Singletary has been fired, according to city manager Greg Horwedel.

Horwedel said allegations of an extramarital affair led to the investigation.

He was terminated because of his subsequent actions that were violations of the code of conduct for officers, Horwedel said.

"He was not solely terminated based on the extramarital affair," Horwedel said.

Singletary has been under investigation since last week, but it wasn't clear until today what for.

Horwedel had only said it was for possible violations of city policy and police policy.

A second Plant City Police Department employee was also fired. Horwedel said Sgt. Mark Mathis was terminated for falsifying a dispatch record.

Singletary's firing is effective Wednesday; the search for a new chief will begin immediately.
