Mall shooting victim has ties to Bay area

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday morning, shots rang out in the Columbia Mall in Maryland.

"We have not been able to verify any type of relationship at this point between him and either one of our victims. We can't establish if there is one, and we can't establish that there is not one," said Howard County Police Chief William McMahon.

Three people inside were dead. Zumiez manager Brianna Benlolo, 21, of College Park and Tyler Johnson 25, of Mount Airy were two of them.

The shooter, later identified as 19 year old Darion Marcus Aguilar, killed himself after shooting the two skate-shop employees.

"He just emerged out of one of the dressing rooms on the right hand side," said an unidentified witness.

Authorities said Aguilar used a 12 gauge shotgun, firing off between 6 to 8 shots.

Witnesses said Benlolo was his first victim.

"He shot her then 10 to 15, not even 10 seconds, later I heard the second gun shot," said the witness.

It took hours for authorities to identify Aguilar as the shooter.

Those who knew him said he was quiet and an avid skateboarder. Near his body, authorities found backpacks containing IED explosives.

"These were homemade devices consisting of flash powder and household items," said Chief McMahon.

Many questions remain unanswered as investigators continue searching for a motive.

The family of the victims also have many questions. Benlolo has ties to the Tampa Bay area.

Family members said she grew up in a military family and spent time in Colorado before moving to Maryland two years ago.

Brianna's stepmom, who lives in Spring Hill, said Brianna was a beautiful young lady who still had a long life ahead of her.

Brianna's family said she leaves behind a 2-year-old son.

Many of her family members from Spring Hill have left for Maryland during this tragic time.
