Hernando County sheriff Al Nienhuis has fired a detention deputy following child abuse charges against him.
Last week, we reported that deputy Cody Marrone had been charged after a recent incident. He is accused of burning a 3-year-old child with a hair dryer, causing severe injuries.
On Thursday morning, Nienhuis released this statement:
"I completely understand the public's anger and frustration regarding this case. I have three daughters myself and cannot fathom how this could occur or what the child's family must be feeling. It would be a huge understatement to say that I, too, am angry and frustrated over these events. It is especially frustrating when one of our employees does something like this, because I know that before we even consider a person for employment, we do a background that is very difficult to pass. It is so difficult, in fact, that most people don't even attempt the application process. Once an application is submitted, a huge number of applicants fail, due to items revealed in the process.
Unfortunately, after talking to the case detective and getting some specific details about this particular investigation, my anger and frustration only increased. The public can rest assured, however, we will do our very best to see that justice is served in this case."
It remains unclear what the relationship was between Marrone and the boy. Deputies only said he was in "Marrone's care."
