Thieves strike fire station in Habersham County

Posted: Updated:
HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities are searching for thieves who struck a fire station in Habersham County over the weekend.

The crooks broke into Macedonia Fire Station 15 near Clarksville and stole tools and equipment, according to fire officials. The fire station did not have a burglar alarm because it's manned by volunteers, who were away when the break-in happened.

Chief Jeff Cain says thieves stole a generator, an ax, a chainsaw, medical bags, an automatic defibrillator, latex gloves and more. The gear was stripped from fire trucks and the fire station in an isolated part of the county.

Investigators believe one man broke in through the bathroom window and then got help from others who hid a truck in the back of the building. They didn't take some radios and other gear used specifically by firefighters.

Sheriff's investigators are still trying to track the thieves from fingerprints left behind.

The chief says the stolen items -- valued between $8,000 and $10,000 -- have been replaced with gear from other fire stations. Despite the losses, the chief said the public is safe.

"Trucks are still rolling," Cain said. "We did not miss a lick, but it's just an aggravating thing to go through."

Cain says he will now consider enhanced security for four volunteer fire stations in his jurisdiction. He also hopes public attention will lead to the arrests of suspects soon.
