Protecting your pooch's paws from snow and salt

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

As humans, we stick our feet in socks in boots and still complain about slipping and plodding through snow and slush. Imagine then a dog's life: four feet, no shoes and the bane of every urban pup's existence.

"It's like putting salt in a wound or putting salt on sensitive skin," Dr. Marc Siegel of Park East Animal Hospital says of the salt spread on sidewalks to melt snow. He recommends washing your pet's paws as soon as you return from a walk. And, because it's a salt-eat-paw world, Siegel suggests booties for longer journeys. He also calls dog sweaters more than just a fashion statement.

"Some dogs definitely need it and benefit from it, especially dogs with a very short hair-coat," he says.

As the good veterinarian tells us over and over, every dog is different.

"If they don't want to be outside, keep them inside as much as possible," the doctor says.

If the paws, breed, or coat demands do curb your pet's exercise routine when the temperature drops, the snow falls, and the salt sticks.
