A formal investigation into suspended Plant City Police Chief Steven Singletary officially began Tuesday, City Manager Greg Horwedel said.
Horwedel, who is heading up the investigation, made his first public comments since news broke a day earlier that Singletary had been placed on paid administrative leave.
"We felt that the accusations were serious enough to warrant a full and fair investigation," Horwedel told a group of reporters at City Hall.
The City Manager wouldn't discuss the exact details of the accusations.
"It's a violation of city policy, potentially; and police policy, potentially," Horwedel said. "Unfortunately, I can't comment on the specific nature of the allegations at this time."
Horwedel was asked whether the chief is accused of allowing his personal life to spill over into his police work.
"You're really going to have to talk to Chief Singletary about anything related to his personal life," the City Manager responded.
No timetable is being placed on the investigation, although Horwedel said he wants it to wrap up as quickly as possible. He would not rule out bringing in an outside agency to help ensure impartiality.
Singletary has not been available for comment. Capt Jerry Stwan has been placed in charge of administrative duties during the chief's suspension.
