Officers from Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Hennepin County assisted the Hopkins Police Department respond to a standoff at an apartment building on Monday.

The tense situation unfolded after a 32-year-old man wanted in Brooklyn Center refused to surrender, and the dramatic moments took place right in downtown Hopkins on the east side of Main Street, not far from Highway 169.

Hopkins police evacuated the building at about 10:20 a.m. after a man wanted on a felony-level assault charge following a shooting on Saturday refused to leave his apartment.

"We knew that he resided in our city," Sgt. Mike Glassberg, of the Hopkins Police Department, told Fox 9 News. "We went up there to try and make contact, and at that point, we realized that we needed more resources."

SWAT officers wearing camouflage surrounded the apartment building while curious bystanders looked on. For more than five hours, the standoff continued.

"But we realized real quickly we weren't going to get the compliance," Glassberg admitted. "Any time there is a weapon involved, we want to be very safe for not only officers, but obviously the community."

Several blocks nearby were also cordoned off as police used a special weapon to shoot out the window of the man's third-floor unit.

"I thought they were gunshots, but I got chased back," Tammy Anderson said. "I can't go home."

Police used a camera mounted on a pole to get a better look inside, and they insist no weapons were fired; however, at about 4 p.m., residents did hear gas canisters being shot into the apartment.

"I know they tried a lot of different options to negotiate his surrender, and ultimately, we used the chemical gas," Glassberg confirmed.

The SWAT teams did capture the man, who had barricaded himself inside. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and has since been booked by Brooklyn Center police. His identity has not been released.
