Pinellas Park woman suspected of lighting couch on fire

Posted: Updated:

Pinellas Park police have arrested a woman as part of an arson investigation.

Officers were called to a home at 7685 40th Street N. just before 2 a.m. Monday to respond to a woman destroying items inside an apartment.

Officers tried getting Barbie Ann Winstead, 44, to come out of a bathroom, but she initially ignored their requests.

When she eventually came outside, officers noticed smoke billowing from the living room and a couch was on fire.

Police tried extinguishing the couch, but the fire spread too quickly.

Officers then went door-to-door to evacuate the rest of the complex.

When firefighters arrived it took about 20 minutes to get it under control, and the adjacent apartments were damaged by smoke.

No one was hurt, but six people are looking for a new place to live.

One tenant, who didn't want to be identified, said he heard Winstead and her boyfriend fighting hours earlier, and he thinks he could have prevented the fire.

"Last night I was telling my roommate if I have to hear this stuff again tonight I'm calling the police and I wish I would have then. Now we're sitting here homeless, and I hope they had a good time."

The Red Cross provided temporary hotel rooms.

The complex owner has no time frame on when tenants can move back in.

Winstead was booked on an arson charge and battery on a police officer.
