South Philly Residents On Alert Following Vehicle Tire Thefts

Posted: Updated:

South Philly Residents are on edge after criminals have stolen tires and rims from several cars around their neighborhoods in the past week.

South Police Detectives said the thieves typically strike in the middle of the night and steal all four tires and rims, then prop the cars up on crates, leaving them completely immobilized.

"I feel sick in my stomach, and their hands should fall off because it's never going to stop, they just keep getting away with it, getting away with it," victim Christy Foti said.

Foti woke up to find her car without its wheels Sunday.

It's one of two Chryslers near 10th and Bigler that fit the profile of the crooks handy work.

"Usually this stuff doesn't happen, and to see this happen in this neighborhood is shocking," Louie Acciavatti said.

Acciavatti is worried he could be next, after seeing a silver Honda without its wheels near 17th and Porter.

A white Honda Accord was left sitting on cinder blocks, just a few blocks away.

Joe Meloni said the bandits cost his friend 65 hundred dollars, so he's not taking any chances.

"I'm trying to keep spots in front of my house every night and I try to walk my dog in the middle of the night just to keep a peek on things," Meloni said.

Investigators said the criminals aren't targeting a specific type of car.

Marc Ferguson and others created the Taking Our South Philadelphia Streets Back Facebook page last summer to help put a stop to the crime sprees like this one.

"I mean it doesn't take two seconds to take off four tires and rims off of a vehicle. Somebody had to see something," Ferguson said.

Police said it's been hard to get any prints off the vehicles, because the culprits have likely worn gloves with the cold weather.

An upset Foti had this message for those responsible.

"How would you feel if I did this to your car, or your family? It's not about the money, but it's just you invaded my personal property," she said.

Police said they have no suspects at this time. If you have any information, you're asked to call South Detectives at 215-686-3183.
